191 PUTTING IT OFF AS LONG AS POSSIBLE

VIDEO: Bustling Post Office on Tax Day

The Barrington Post Office is very busy on April 18.
It’s one of the busiest days of the year for the U.S. Postal Service. That’s right, it’s Tax Day.
The Barrington Post Office was far from quiet this afternoon as a steady stream of patrons made their way through the lobby. Although uncle sam gave taxpayers three extra days to file 2010 tax returns this year, some residents waited until the deadline to postmark their returns.
"It's part of being a taxpayer," Jose Reyes said. "It's the deadline so I have no choice but to file today."
The traditional tax deadline of April 15 didn’t fall on a weekend this year, but it did fall on Emancipation Day. That’s why the IRS named April 18 as the 2011 deadline.
Postal worker Samuel Ang said alternative methods of filing are making for a slightly calmer tax day.
"Every year we're getting less and less people mailing manually at the window. I think more people are electronically filing," he said.
The Barrington Post Office will remain open until 6 p.m., but if you plan to arrive in the late afternoon, be prepared for a long wait.
"Most people come in after 2 or 3 p.m. and through when we close," Ang said. When asked if the line will be long at closing time, Ang replied enthusiastically. "Oh yeah, definitely, we know that!"
