A great idea comes our way from London!

Giving London street kids – even teen gang members – a safe (and colorful) home

Christian Science Monitor, The (Boston, MA) - Monday, February 20, 2012
Author: Sian Griffiths, / Correspondent
Abstract: Camila Batmanghelidjh founded Kids Company to help children – and now helps troubled teens. who often get little sympathy since the London riots.
The South London office of Camila Batmanghelidjh is a world of whimsy – where "Alice in Wonderland" meets "Aladdin." Its turquoise-and- orange walls feature windows inspired by Islamic architecture, reminiscent of Ms. Batmanghelidjh's native Iran.

Much of the décor – including colorful tables, mobiles, a "wish tree," and drawings – is the work of children, some of the thousands she's helped. Most arrived homeless. Many have been victims of chronic abuse, neglect, and exclusion from school.

The room is typical of the type of environment Batmanghelidjh (pronounced "bat-man-GHELL-idge") wants to create for these traumatized children. She seeks to fuel their imaginations and let them know that "anything is possible" – while attending to their need to be clothed, fed, housed, educated, and loved.

This is the secret of Kids Company, her effort – along with 600 staff and 11,000 volunteers – to turn around the lives of troubled children.

Batmanghelidjh, a former refugee, is well known in Britain. Her advice is much sought after by politicians and her opinions by the news media. A painting of her hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, alongside those of British kings and queens – and that of actress Dame Helen Mirren, who is a huge fan of Batmanghelidjh. Dame Helen made a donation to Kids Company after she won an Oscar for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen."

"I don't know where I would be without Kids Company," says Ben Woodhouse effusively. He was 8 years old and "a little bit naughty" when he met Batmanghelidjh. "I thought she was this big, wonderful, crazy woman who listened!" He was rude and insubordinate at first, he says. But Batmanghelidjh won his trust during an art class. They chatted while he drew.

"She empowered me and still inspires me," Mr. Woodhouse says. Now 24, he works at Kids Company full time.

At an interview, Batmanghelidjh is dressed in her trademark billowing robes and turban. Curled up on a divan straight out of "1001 Nights," she reflects on the growth of Kids Company, which now includes three street centers serving 17,000 children – including gang members – across London. Ninety-seven percent were reached through word of mouth.

Today, Batmanghelidjh spends much of her time fundraising: Kids Company depends on 1,700 sources for support.

She admits to having felt overwhelmed – but determined – when the first Kids Company street center opened in 1996. She expected to help vulnerable children under 11. Instead, 100 teenage gang members with a reputation for throwing Molotov cocktails arrived at her door.

"I opened the door at 3 p.m. every day in a state of absolute terror. But nevertheless I would welcome them and say 'Please don't spit!' " she now says with a laugh.

By gaining their trust and listening to them, she learned that many had been victims of abuse and neglect.

Batmanghelidjh first imagined opening an orphanage at the age of 9, she says. One of four children born to wealthy parents, a Belgian mother and an Iranian doctor father, she led a privileged life – far removed from that of a homeless London child.

Despite struggling early on with dyslexia, she developed a good reputation at school by looking after between 70 and 90 fellow schoolchildren at lunchtime.

Her mother – "a cross between Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor," she says – nurtured her creativity. Her father was the strategist. Her uncles, entrepreneurs who built a ski resort, taught her to think big.

In 1979, Batmanghelidjh was attending private school in England when the Iranian revolution erupted. Her world was turned upside down. Her father was imprisoned – and thought to have been executed. For her sister, the pressure was unbearable. She ended up killing herself. Batmanghelidjh quickly learned "how stress can tip people over into mental illness," she says.

Both her parents survived and later joined the family in England.

After qualifying as a psychotherapist, Batmanghelidjh set up Kids Company in 1996 – not quite the orphanage she had dreamed of – but a "halfway" option.

Today, she finds it difficult to raise money for troubled teens following the riots that swept England last summer.

"People don't like teenagers," she says, noting that while teens aren't as cute as toddlers, they are "just as vulnerable."

It can take up to three years just to earn the trust of a traumatized child, she says. But that's when remarkable transformations can begin. "We've got children studying medicine – they were homeless," she says. "I've got a boy who was sleeping in a dustbin enclosure, was involved in gangs. He's now studying to be a barrister [lawyer]."

Heather Munro, chief executive of London's Probation Trust, which works with former criminals, praises Batmanghelidjh's "refreshing" approach.

"She sees potential in each and every one, where most agencies would see these individuals as problems," Ms. Munro says. "Batmanghelidjh's passion and charisma are spellbinding."

See the plowshare in the sword

See the plowshare in the sword

Christian Science Monitor, The (Boston, MA) - Tuesday, February 21, 2012
Author: The editors of the Christian Science Sentinel
Abstract: A Christian Science perspective.
At first glance the Bible promise looks wonderfully poetic, but a bit unrealistic. Beating swords into plowshares? That’s the action plan for establishing peace among nations? Consider this from the Old Testament book of Micah: “He [God] shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (4:3). As if to press the message further into thought, the same promise – with minor variations – appears again in Isaiah. And yet again in Joel.
It takes spiritual vision to see within a sword the promise of a plowshare, or to glimpse within a spear the promise of a pruninghook. It takes keen insight to discern within an AK-47 a cuff link.
What?!
That’s no misprint. You may have heard about the charitable organizations – one based in New York and the other in Africa – that are working hard to get dangerous and illegal assault weapons off the streets of Congo. The concept is simple. First, scoop up the weapons. Break them down. Then, transform them into jewelry. Sell the jewelry at designer prices in New York and other high-end markets. Finally, use proceeds to get more weapons off the streets. Step by modest step, the prospects for a wider peace edge forward.
How does one discern within a sword the potential of a plow? How does one see within an AK-47 the promise of a peaceful neighborhood? Spiritual discernment is, in fact, indispensable. Spiritual discernment – the God-bestowed capacity to recognize His totally spiritual and peaceful creation right where a discordant and violent one appears to be – seems a rarity.
It seems so easy to go through one’s days and take in only the superficial and violence-prone view of things. And yet, looking deeper with spiritual discernment doesn’t have to be the uncommon option. Because spiritual discernment, and the road to peace it uncovers, is accessible to every honest seeker for a world at peace.
In truth, peace is in accord with the Almighty’s nature, pervades the Almighty’s spiritual universe, and conforms to the Almighty’s law. His law is forever at work.
Consider what might be the best known statement of His law – the First Commandment. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me." A person can read this statement, aloud and unhurried, in a mere four or five seconds. Yet it is not an overstatement to say that this law, the underlying truth of it, has been a key to every genuinely successful endeavor for peace on earth. Spiritually discern this law, and you’ve just glimpsed what could realistically transform a warrior’s weapon into a farmer’s tool. Spiritually discern this law, and you’ve just glimpsed that it is not just a command. It is a promise. You might think of it as if God had said: “I promise you, My child. You shall have no other gods before Me, because there are no others for you to have. I promise you, I am the One, the only divine presence, power, and peacemaker for you to have.”
Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy so loved this commandment, she once identified it as her favorite text. She discerned a world of good coming from obedience to it. She said, in part: “One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself;’ annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, – whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” p. 340).
The power of this divine promise, infinitely surpassing the power of an AK-47, is forever at hand. Its transforming action is even now occurring. Plowshares are coming into view.

B220 Superintendent: Big Changes Coming to Education

Barrington 220 Superintendent Tom Leonard and Board President Brian Battle talk about state of school district.
More than 9,000 students are served by the Barrington 220 school district. The district covers 12 communities and 72 square miles. The district serves 3,000 meals daily, making it the biggest food service industry in Barrington, said Superintendent Tom Leonard, at a recent Barrington Noon Rotary meeting. The district also employs 1,200 people, making it one of the largest area employers. The district's technology department supports 4,500 computers.
Barrington 220 Board President Brian Battle and Leonard shared the successes and challenges of the district at the Feb. 14 luncheon, held at The Garlands. The school leaders also spoke about the future of the district and of education.
Successes
  • During the 2010-11 school year Barrington High School students posted the highest average ACT score in the school’s history at 25.
  • According to school rankings posted by Chicago area media, Barrington 220 consistently ranks among the top-performing schools in the Chicago area.
  • For 16 consecutive years, the board and administration have balanced the school budget.
  • Barrington 220 has received a AAA bond rating from Standard & Poor’s for the last four years.
  • Barrington 220 is one of just eight school districts in the nation to receive a “Strong” AAA rating from Standard & Poor’s.
Challenges
  • Revenues continue to decrease while costs are up slightly. Battle said the school board is considering budget cuts and changes to keep the budget balanced.
  • The district lost a federal grant for the popular Chinese immersion program and is considering how it can continue to fund the program.
  • Implementing the national Common Core Standards will result in significant changes to school curriculum.
  • The district will negotiate a new teacher’s contract next year.
  • There is a move in state government to pass teacher pension costs on to local districts and absorbing those costs would be difficult for the district.
  • There is also a push in state government to decrease funding for school transportation.
One of the high points for the school district is the community support it receives with fundraising at $1 million annually. “That really helps enhance our programs,” Leonard said.
Looking to the Future
In the near future, Barrington 220 will see a continued decline in enrollment. Whether or not enrollment picks up in the future, depends on the real estate market.
“Our older residents are staying put. Empty nesters have increased significantly,” Leonard said.
Battle said the schools finances should improve in the future as the district’s debt load is paid off. He said the large debt load is due to facility improvements and building in the 1990s.
“That left us with the best facilities, but we are in the middle of paying off our debt,” Battle said.
Leonard predicted that education will change dramatically in the next 10 years, due to technology.
“There are going to be more changes in education in the next 10 years than ever. Teachers are going to go through lots of changes,” he said.
Among those changes predicted by Leonard:
  • No need for backpacks due to e-books.
  • Students can finish curriculum on their own time rather than with the class.
  • A top teacher can teach millions of children at one time, via the Internet.
  • No snow days, as kids can stay connected to school.

"They" say that Maureen Yates can't beat the 6th district Republican incumbent Peter Roskam. This is utter balderdash. Here's why

"They" say that Rostram will "crush her" in the general election; that she can't be elected.

Hell, Rostram barely beat the one-legged female Iraqi war Vet with very little experience at anything outside of the military, Tammy Duckworth (who, quite frankly, ought not to be a viable candidate of "the left" because she is U.S. army through and through, and she fully understands that the U.S. army is fighting a very serious war against a very well-armed and very serious, and very deadly opponent:  the U.S. Air Force.  THAT war is being waged over the defense $$'s.  Who's a-gonna' get them big ole, bad ole, war bucks? To the victor, belongs the spoils, so, if Tammy is elected, it'll be good for the army (maybe not so good for the Air Force). But Tammy does not want to discuss the U.S. Defense budget, which is more than THE REST OF THE FREAKIN' WORLD COMBINED spends on defense.  WTF is up with THAT?

We have DARPA inventing weapons systems for enemies we are going to possibly fight 50 years down the road.  The only enemy that will be well enough equipped to fight THAT battle, of course, is the illegitmate bastard state of Israel, conceived as a sop to all the 6,000,000 Jews that Hitler had killed, and the world's palpable silence at what was going on - (the Roman Catholic Church in Rome was QUITE silent on the matter).  BUT, those crafty Israeli's - they have so many citizens with dual U.S. - Israel citizenship that they can steal and pass along U.S. military secrets to Mossad (which indeed is done).  Only in America could we delude ourselves of the importance of having all these ever more sophisticated, ever more complicated weapons systems that, when the time comes to use them comes, and should one of them go haywire, the rest will burn down as surely as Old Ben in the movie "V for Vendetta."

So, Rostram is vulnerable to a candidate with a compelling back story. This is crystal clear.  How compelling is the back story of my favored 6th Congressional District Democratic Candidate Maureen Yates?

REPEATING AN EARLIER POSTING - but with a different format.

Note well Maureen's story.  Follow the arc of her life.  Look at the things she has been committed to.  Tell me this woman's entire life's history has NOT been geared for having her ready for THIS MOMENT to serve her fellow citizens as an elected offical.  Go ahead.  Try to tell me!  Read it and WEEP - we don't see this kind of human being both in our midst and ready to serve as a politician.
