Winning Ways
Ottawa Township High School's music department will continue its reign another year, gathering enough points to capture the school's 15th consecutive state title. OTHS competed in the organizational contest at Morris High School on Saturday, where chorus and band members received the maximum 300 points. Combined with the 666 points received during the solo and ensemble competition in March, an unofficial score of 966 was enough to win the Class A title. "It was outstanding," said Choral Director Roger Amm. "They conducted themselves like ladies and gentlemen. They represented their community and school well." Sarah Reckmeyer is the band director. Eight groups competed, each earning a Division I (superior) rating. Competing were wind ensemble symphonic band, jazz band, mixed choir, bass choir, jazz choir and two treble choirs. "It was a great day for both sides of the music department," Amm said. Coming in second, as of press time, was Carbondale High School with 840 points. However, among all classifications, including Class AA, OTHS had the highest point total. "It was a double honor," Amm said. The Illinois High School Association should make results official shortly. This is OTHS' 16th title overall. OTHS won their first state title in 1983. Amm said students are proud of the school's history of musical excellence and he hopes the community doesn't tire of hearing of their accomplishments. About 300 students are in the music program, with most competing in the music sweepstakes. "I think it's a goal in their sights to do the best they can," he said. "It's a major accomplishment that takes so many coordinating together to achieve." |
