536 Your 2 Cents' Worth: Tuesday, May 10, 2011

I’m a little sad — it’s almost mid-May and my favorite department store still doesn’t have its Christmas decorations up yet!

— Only 230+ shopping days left in 50311!

Koran experts critical of the burial of Osama bin Laden verify the oxymoron Muslim scholar.

— Des Moines man

I’m sure the Bush haters would never give credit, but it was very considerate of him to decline the invitation to ground zero, allowing President Obama to have all the glory. George is a true Southern gentleman.

— Concerned grandma

Can we use this column to help each other? I’m looking for silk flowers that weren’t made in China. I’d like to reward our own “made in the USA” producers, and I’d be willing to spend a little more. Can you help me?

— Help find American products

To Gilbert Tea Party and others who blame everything on liberals: You are part of the problem in this country. Blaming people you don’t even understand in relation to issues you don’t understand is divisive. For once, stand together as Americans, one nation, one voice.

— Voice united

I find it interesting that a story about cabbage ran in the column next to the Vander Plaats-tea party article.

— Friend of veggies

Our president doesn’t think Americans are mature enough to see photographic proof that a terrorist has a bullet in his head, but local media has no qualms about presenting a lengthy dinner hour barrage of photos and X-rays of a battered, broken and brain-damaged 2-year-old boy.

The Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce has tagged a walleye with a $10,000 prize to kick off the season, but the winner has to pass a polygraph to prove he paid the $20 entry fee. Give me a break — where are they going to find a fisherman who can pass a polygraph?

Bush’s approach: bravado and distracted. Obama: disciplined and focused. It makes a difference.

— Pella POTUS backer

House Approprations Chairman Scott Raecker says in part that a two-year budget is honest and that it provides priority services in education. I defy anyone to say how no financial room for growth is honest and helps schools. Our school system and kids deserve better.

— Visit a school, Urbandale

If we brought all our troops home we could have the most heavily guarded borders in the world, PLUS we would immediately end the recession as $2 billion a day would be spent in the U.S. rather than places like Iraq.

— Real Defense 50273

Where’s Chris Rants? I miss his thoughtful and calming influence on Iowa Republicans.

— The lawn mower

The Supreme Court says a corporation is a person. I think I’ll incorporate my 18-year-old pickup so it is eligible to vote in the next election.

— Maybe it’s also a dependent for tax purposes

While enjoying some people-watching at Pella Tulip Time, I was wondering why people bring their pets. While small ones aren’t so bad, huge ones seem inappropriate. Too many chances for dog fights or some small child to get injured.

— Just wondering

Republicans in Iowa always talk about trying to be more open and fair about Iowa’s future. What is fair about passing two resolutions with fewer than five representatives present? Talk about hypocrisy.

— Is this Iowa? D.M.

Please help save the G.T. Carpenter Home on 23rd Street. The city wants 3 years/$50,000 worth of work done in 90 days. The owner for over 30 years is one of the Carpenter Neighbors’ charter/founding members. He has been ill/disabled since 2007.
