A storm sweeps through Sangin District, Afghanistan
Well, not really nowhere. That was just the subject line of the email that delivered it. It's a storm blowing over Sangin District, in southern Afghanistan, where NPR photographer David Gilkey is embedded with Marines on patrol.
In his words: "Here is how you end up on a tiny outpost for the foreseeable future in Afghanistan. This was about one minute before this thing rolled over the top of us!"
We don't know much more because the storm cut communications. But it's a pretty epic scene that almost resembles something from the Dutch Golden Age ... or by aGerman Romantic. Or, I guess, an American contemporary. What do you think? Could Gilkey have secretly painted this?
